Aerobic Septic System
Ten years ago, in Central Texas, low pressure dose systems (LPDs) were the most common septic systems being installed. Septic systems using surface application for disposal were not being done at all the Central Texas area, and it was somewhat rare to see aerobic systems being installed.
Now, LPDs are one of the least common systems, while the most common system being installed in Texas is the aerobic treatment unit (ATU) with spray dispersal. 40 to 50% of all septic systems permitted in Texas are such systems. So, the market in this local area has changed dramatically in the last decade.
In general, the construction industry is unfamiliar with the differences in septic systems. As such, contractors often promote cheap price over all other considerations.
Owners are left, therefore, with the results of a decision process based only on the lowest installed cost. They are not advised of the limitations of their system, of the costs to operate their system, and of the problems that can arise from the improper use of these system.
If the owner is told anything about their system, they are rarely advised of the costs of repairs and upkeep. If they told anything, they are provided cost estimates that are far below the real cost.
The septic system costs that most owners are not aware of are the cost of electricity, cost of repairs, cost of non-routine visits, and the cost of periodic pumping. In many cases, if the owners were aware of these costs, they would make very different decisions on their homes.
